Surgical treatment of an ingrown toenail, Category II complexity
An ingrown toenail can progress to a more pronounced condition, where the edge of the nail plate grows deeper into the nail fold, inflammation keeps recurring, or excess tissue develops around the nail. In such cases, a more extensive surgical procedure may be required. Category II complexity is assigned based on the extent of the surgical procedure required in each individual case.

Why can an ingrown toenail keep coming back?
Even if the pain and inflammation temporarily disappear, the underlying cause of the ingrowth may remain. The problem most often recurs when the edge of the nail plate continues to press against the nail fold or when the factors contributing to repeated ingrowth persist after previous treatment.
Recurrent ingrowth may be caused by:
- Cutting out the corner of the nail yourself. If only the part pressing into the skin is removed, the new edge may grow back sharp and penetrate the surrounding tissue again.
- An abnormal shape of the nail plate. Significant curvature or deformity of the nail can create постоянный pressure on the nail fold.
- Previous treatment did not eliminate the cause of the ingrowth. A temporary reduction in inflammation does not always mean that the nail has stopped injuring the surrounding tissues.
- Constant mechanical pressure. Tight footwear, repeated pressure, or injuries to the toe can contribute to the problem.
- Repeated trauma to the surrounding tissues. Frequent attempts to remove or “dig out” the edge of the nail yourself can cause further injury and inflammation.
In cases of recurrent or more pronounced ingrowth, surgical treatment of an ingrown toenail, Category II complexity, may be considered. The need for this procedure is determined by the surgeon after an examination, assessing not only the nail itself but also the condition of the surrounding tissues and the extent of treatment required in each individual case.

Don’t wait until the problem affects the way you walk again
If an ingrown toenail returns after previous treatment, pain makes it difficult to walk normally, or inflammation keeps recurring, it is worth seeing a surgeon. During the examination, the doctor will determine the extent of treatment required in your particular case. If a less or more extensive procedure is needed, surgical treatment of an ingrown toenail, Category I or Category III complexity, may be recommended.
After the procedure, depending on the condition of the wound, wound dressing changes and a follow-up examination may be required to monitor the healing process.
Book an examination – the surgeon will assess the condition of the nail and determine the appropriate treatment approach. Call +380 97 312 92 91. We are located at: 1 Kiltseva Road, Respublika Park Shopping Mall, Kyiv, near Teremky Metro Station.
