When should you call a doctor for a home visit for a child?
- High fever that is difficult to reduce or lasts more than 1–2 days
- Acute symptoms of respiratory infection (cough, runny nose, sore throat) with worsening condition
- Suspected intestinal infection (vomiting, diarrhea, weakness)
- The child is too weak to travel to the clinic
- Skin rash of unknown origin
- Ear pain or suspected ear infection (otitis)
- Exacerbation of chronic conditions
- Need for a newborn’s initial home examination
- Follow-up after illness or treatment
- Parents want to avoid contact with other sick children
When a home visit does NOT replace a clinic visit
A home doctor visit is a convenient format for primary or follow-up care, but it has its limitations. There are situations when it is important to go directly to a clinic or hospital, as more advanced diagnostics and medical equipment are required.
In a clinical setting, a doctor has access to a full range of diagnostic tools and can make faster, more accurate decisions about treatment. Therefore, in complex or potentially dangerous situations, an examination at a medical center is the safer and more effective option.
