Complex wound dressing

A complex wound requires precise assessment and an appropriate approach throughout the healing process. The doctor assesses the tissues, cleans and treats the wound, manages discharge or drainage, selects suitable dressing materials, and monitors changes throughout treatment. This approach is used for deep, postoperative, inflamed, and slow-healing wounds.

FAQ

What does a complex wound dressing involve?

The doctor assesses the tissues, the nature and amount of wound discharge, the condition of the wound edges and, when present, the drainage. After the previous dressing is removed, the wound is cleaned and treated as required; additional treatment of specific areas or drainage management may also be performed when indicated. The procedure is completed by selecting appropriate dressing materials and applying a new dressing according to the wound’s needs.

What are the signs of complicated wound healing?

A postoperative or traumatic wound should gradually progress toward stable healing. The following changes may indicate a complication:

  • pain becomes more intense or returns after a period of improvement;
  • redness spreads beyond the wound;
  • swelling increases;
  • the amount of discharge does not decrease or suddenly increases;
  • discharge becomes thick, purulent, or develops an unpleasant odor;
  • the wound edges separate;
  • recurrent bleeding occurs;
  • the skin around the wound becomes unusually warm or changes color;
  • the wound does not show expected improvement over time.

These changes require a surgical consultation, as further management depends on the underlying cause of impaired healing.
