Primary surgical wound treatment

A deep cut, laceration, contaminated wound, or an injury involving a foreign object requires proper assessment of the affected area. The surgeon examines the wound, determines the extent of treatment needed and, when necessary, cleans the wound, removes contamination or damaged tissue, controls bleeding, and decides whether the wound requires closure. After the procedure, you receive clear recommendations for further treatment and wound care.

When should you see a surgeon for primary surgical wound treatment?

  • A deep or gaping wound – if the edges are separated, deeper tissues are visible, or the wound cannot be safely closed without medical assessment.
  • A torn or contaminated wound – especially after a fall, impact, workplace injury, or contact with soil, sand, or other contaminants.
  • A puncture wound – including injuries caused by a nail, sharp object, or bite, even if the opening appears small.
  • Increasing pain, redness, swelling, or discharge from the wound.
  • A foreign object in the wound – such as glass, metal, wood, or another material remaining in the tissues.
  • A wound involving the hand, fingers, foot, or a joint – especially if there is pain, numbness, weakness, limited movement, or other signs of possible damage to deeper structures.
  • An animal bite – due to the increased risk of infection.
  • Bleeding that does not stop.

FAQ

What should you avoid doing to a wound before seeing a surgeon?

Do not try to suture or tightly pull together a deep or contaminated wound yourself. The surgeon first needs to assess its depth, the condition of the surrounding tissues, and the risk of infection.

If there is a piece of glass, metal, wood, or another foreign object in the wound, do not try to remove it yourself if it is deeply embedded or cannot be easily removed without causing further injury. Its position and the possible damage to the surrounding tissues should be assessed first.

You should also avoid repeatedly pouring different antiseptics, ointments, or other “healing” products into a deep wound. Before seeing a surgeon, it is better to protect the injured area with a clean dressing. If bleeding continues, apply firm pressure with a clean gauze pad or bandage and avoid removing it every few minutes to check the wound.

If you are unsure whether the wound requires primary surgical treatment, you do not need to determine the extent of treatment yourself. You can start with a consultation with a surgeon, who will assess the injury and determine whether surgical wound treatment, suturing, dressing changes, or another type of care is needed.

It is also important to tell the doctor when and how the injury occurred, what may have contaminated the wound, and when you last received a tetanus vaccination. This information may affect the further treatment plan.

Booking primary surgical wound treatment

If the wound has already been treated but you develop pain, redness, swelling, discharge, or other changes, a follow-up consultation with a surgeon and further treatment may be required.

At Doctor Sam, you can receive care from the initial assessment of the injury to determining the next steps in treatment. If the patient is unable to visit the medical center, depending on the situation, you may also consider a surgeon’s home visit within Kyiv or a surgeon’s home visit outside Kyiv.
