Primary surgical wound treatment in children
After an injury, the paediatric surgeon assesses the depth and nature of the wound, checks for foreign bodies and possible damage to deeper tissues. The wound is cleaned of contaminants, non-viable tissue is removed, and the appropriate surgical approach is then determined, including whether the wound requires suturing.

FAQ
What to do after an injury before seeing a surgeon?
The first steps taken after an injury can affect the condition of the wound before it is examined. If the wound is contaminated, it can be gently rinsed with clean running water to remove visible dirt. Do not pour alcohol, iodine, or other irritating solutions directly into a deep wound, as they may damage the tissues.
If the wound is bleeding, apply a clean sterile gauze pad or bandage and press firmly on the area. Avoid repeatedly lifting the dressing to check whether the bleeding has stopped, as this can disrupt the formation of a blood clot. If blood soaks through the dressing, add another layer on top without removing the original one.
Do not attempt to remove glass, metal, wood, or any other object if it is deeply embedded in the tissues. The object may be partially limiting the bleeding, and attempting to remove it yourself can cause further injury.
Before the wound is examined, do not seal it tightly with a plaster, apply ointments, or cover it with powders. Cover the injured area with a clean sterile dressing and see a paediatric surgeon to assess the wound and determine the appropriate treatment.
Booking a paediatric surgeon consultation
A fresh wound should be assessed as soon as possible, particularly if it is deep, contaminated, has separated edges, or continues to bleed. During the examination, the paediatric surgeon will assess the depth of the injury, check the surrounding tissues, and perform the necessary primary surgical wound treatment.
