This can apply to a small splinter, a superficial piece of wood, or a thin thorn. Before attempting removal, wash your hands, clean the skin, and use clean tweezers.
If the foreign body is deep, only partially visible, does not come out easily, or breaks during an attempt to remove it, do not continue digging into the wound with a needle, knife, or other objects. This can further damage the tissue, push the fragment deeper, or leave part of it inside the wound. Particular caution is needed with glass, metal fragments, and foreign bodies located near a nail, joint, tendon, or eye.
